Amanda Smith began baking pies in her own kitchen in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, in the early 1900s for friends and family. They loved her deep-dish pies so much that her son began selling them at the local YMCA, then door-to-door. Eventually he began selling them to local restaurants and grocery stores. The Schwan Food Company eventually bought Mrs. Smith's Bakeries and now distributes Mrs. Smith's pies, cobblers and pie crusts. Peaches count as part of the fruit group on the U.S. Department of Agricultural's Food Pyramid.
