Olive oil is frequently touted as a beneficial oil for both health and beauty. Olive oil's health benefits have been recognized throughout history. According to an Oct. 18, 2006, article for National Public Radio, Homer referred to olive oil as liquid gold. Using this liquid gold on your hair may provide a number of benefits, including keeping it soft, shiny and moisturized.

History

The use of olive oil dates back to ancient times, according to the National Public Radio article. Ancient civilizations realized the benefits of olive oil in cosmetics, massage oils, lotions and hair treatments. According to author Julia Stepanovs in her book, "Skin Saver Remedies," Cleopatra was said to use olive oil as a moisturizer to help keep her skin free of wrinkles.

Benefits

Olive oil contains several beneficial hair nutrients that can help restore elasticity and shine. According to Care Fair, olive oil is rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants, which can help to nourish your hair and replace lost moisture. You can use extra-virgin olive oil or commercially prepared shampoos, conditioners and hot oil treatments containing olive oil to obtain its beauty benefits.

External Usage

Olive oil can help to increase the shine and elasticity of your hair. You can use olive oil as a pre-shampoo hot oil treatment by warming 1/2 cup of oil in the microwave until it's just warm, pouring it over your hair and covering your head with a shower cap. Let the oil penetrate for 20 minutes before rinsing and shampooing. You can also make a homemade shine-enhancing mask by mixing together olive oil, avocado and baking powder, according to an Oct. 10, 2005, article for CBS News' "The Early Show." Leave this mask on your hair for 15 minutes before washing.

Internal Usage

Adding olive oil to your diet may help to increase your hair's natural shine. According to nutritionist Lisa Drayer in her book, "The Beauty Diet: Looking Great Has Never Been So Delicious," consuming foods that are rich in omega-3 acids, such as olive oil, can promote healthy, shiny hair from the inside out. Add a splash of olive oil to salads or use it as an ingredient to marinate chicken or fish.

Warning

Cover your clothing and body with a towel before applying olive oil to your hair. This will help to avoid stains on your clothes and greasy, slick skin. Always wash olive oil treatments out of your hair completely or you may be left with dull or limp hair.
