The Rocky Mountains stretch over 3,000 miles, from western Canada to New Mexico. With a range so vast and extending through different climates, there are various options for RV campers. Whether seeking a remote spot for some quiet fishing, a mountain climbing or biking base, or a high alpine winter sports camp, the active traveler will find the perfect campground in the Rocky Mountains.

Terrain

RV campers who are novices at driving RVs will need to use extreme caution and pay attention to road signs and warnings throughout the Rocky Mountains. While the grade is generally navigable for most vehicles, traversing through mountain roads at upper elevations to reach the more remote RV parks can be hazardous to larger vehicles. Drivers may check with national park information websites to find out the safest roads to travel.

Climate

Campers who enjoy fishing, hiking, and warm weather outdoor activities will want to camp in summer months, especially if traveling in the Canadian portion of the Rockies. Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies offers 13 campgrounds open from late May through mid-September, allowing campers to enjoy mountain sports in moderate temperatures. Campers traveling as far south as New Mexico can enjoy year-round warm weather.

Colorado

The Rocky Mountains mean Colorado to many people, and there are plenty of campgrounds throughout the state and near most ski resorts. Summer camping near ski resorts provides the opportunity to use chairlifts for active summer sports, while camping provides a great base for activities year-round. Rocky Mountain National Park offers 10 campgrounds in Colorado.

Types

RV camping has become increasingly popular in recent years, with newer and bigger models of RVs meeting consumer demands for luxury and amenities. Campgrounds are often struggling to keep up, so it is necessary for campers to check with each campground regarding the maximum size of a camp spot as well as whether the locale is pull-through or back-in. Some campgrounds offer extended stays.

Campground Amenities

While most active campers will want to use their campsite as a base of activities in the Rocky Mountains, campers with young children or older adults may wish to check on qualities such as campsites with mountain views, bike rentals, park trails, free Wi-Fi, and other activities within the campground. Most campgrounds in the Rocky Mountains will offer modern amenities, although campgrounds in the national parks tend to be more rustic.
