How to Use Google Pedometer

The Google Pedometer, or Gmap Pedometer, allows you to track the distance you cover using Google Maps. It is an excellent tool for calculating distance from one point to another when running or cycling. You can also use the tool to determine calories burned while traveling your route. The pedometer is simple to use, highly accurate, and allows you to print out your route if you want to carry it during your run.

Step 1

Go to the Google Gmaps Pedometer website to begin creating your walking, running or cycling route (see Resources).

Step 2

Drag the map to your desired starting location using your mouse. You can adjust the zoom level with the slider bar located on the left upper part of the map. You also have the option of changing imagery types by clicking the imagery options buttons on the top right of the map.

Step 3

Enter your street address, zip code, city and state, or latitude and longitude to jump directly to that location on the map. The box for entering this information is located just above the map, at the top of the page.

Step 4

Click the "Start Recording" button on the pedometer when you have reached your starting location. Clicking this button will begin recording your traveling distance.

Step 5

Double click to draw new points on the map to mark your route and calculate travel distance. A single click will not work. Your cumulative distance is displayed in the box to the left of the map.

Step 6

Choose the way your route is drawn by selecting one of three radio buttons. "Automatically (for runners)" draws a route that follows streets available on the map. "Automatically (for cyclists)" works the same as the automatic route for runners, but selecting this option will make certain your route does not take you down any one-way streets. "Manually (straight lines)" is ideal for biking or running on hiking trails or through parks. This option draws a straight line from the last entered point.

Step 7

Save your route when finished. At this point, the route line should turn blue to indicate your save was successful.

Step 8

Click the "Undo Last Point" button if you make a mistake and want your distance to revert to a previous point on the map.

Step 9

Start your route over by clicking the "Clear Points and Start Over" link located in the box to the left of the map.

Step 10

Print your route by clicking the "Print Map" link located just below the "Clear Points" link.

Step 11

Use other Google pedometer options, as desired. The map enables you to turn on and off mile markers and to show or hide elevation. You can also elect to turn on the calorie counter link by clicking "Turn on Calorie Counter" located in the box to the left of the map.
