Archery is a popular sport for people of all ages; it promotes endurance, self-esteem and strength training. As a hobby, the archer will shoot at targets, perhaps in competitions and tournaments. As a sport, the bow hunter will shoot at wild game or fish. Lexington, Kentucky, has a wide range of clubs that are dedicated to archery.
Private Clubs
Blue Grass Traps, a private club, is a member of the Blue Grass Sportsman League. The facility is open year-round. It offers rifle ranges, pistol ranges and archery ranges. The archer has a range to shoot at bales at varying distances. Range shooting at bales are 20, 30, 40 and 50 yards. Blue Grass Traps offers archery training for youth and beginners; this training is open to the public at no charge, and the club provides all equipment and instruction.
Schools
Archery One Target for Life is a program developed by the Kentucky Department of Education. It is available in more than 900 schools throughout Kentucky. The program reaches out to students from the middle school to high school level, offering students an alternative to team sports like baseball, basketball or football. The schools provide instruction on the safety, use and discipline necessary for this sport. Archery promotes strength training and self-esteem, and increases a student's physical fitness.
Bowhunting Clubs
Donaldson's Creek West Kentucky Whitetail Outfitters sponsors a bow hunting club. Bow hunting is available from September through November. Hunting stands are provided by the club, and bow hunters can hunt game and fish. All hunts include transportation to and from stands, lodging and meals. Hunting and fishing licenses are required and can be obtained either online or through the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Range
Cedar Hills Archery and Pay Lakes features more than 30 acres of target range facilities and trails. It offers the archer 3-D targets. Cedar Hills is open all year long for the sports enthusiast's enjoyment. The range has more than 30 life-size targets. The range is open for novice and expert archers, providing them with scenic routes and trails to enjoy.
4-H Clubs
There are more than 6,000 youths who attend 4-H sponsored archery and gun shoots. 4-H clubs provide safe and responsible supervised training in the use of firearms and archery equipment. Programs are established for specific age groups and offer competitions.
