Whether you want to enjoy a relaxing view of the New Year's fireworks, the coastline of magnificent shores or the dangers of cliff climbing, there is something for you this New Year's in San Francisco. This family-friendly city awaits you and your loved ones and is ready to help you bring in the New Year without breaking the bank.

Official Fireworks Show

This free family activity is open to everyone and offers an amazing display of fireworks yearly. San Francisco's Embarcadero area is the host of the annual fireworks display. Bring your own chairs, blankets and sweatshirts to enjoy the evening of dazzling pyrotechnics. Park near Crissy Field, Pier 39 or the Aquatic Park for the best views of the night. Arriving early gives you the choice of best seat locations. Families with young children should bring activities to play with while waiting for the fireworks to start.

Kayak the Coastline

Adventure seekers love all the New Year's eve displays going on throughout the city on December 31st of each year. To get the ultimate views, suit up in your wetsuit and head out on the waters for a midnight paddle around the coastline. View the city's official fireworks show from the best seat in the house, or paddle farther south to enjoy the ultimate in calm waters for New Year's. Steer clear of the fireworks barge, as it is dangerous to paddle near those heavy-duty explosives; city security personnel will be sure to warn you if you are too near.

Asian Art Museum

If you are already a member of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, you can enjoy a free evening of historic bell ringing on New Year's eve. Traditionally the 16th-century Japanese bell rings 108 times to ward away negative energies for the upcoming new year. Members of the Asian Art Museum can get their numbered tickets as early as 10 a.m. for their chance to use a large log to swing against the bell. If you want to take part in this yearly event, arrive early to get your spot among the 108 people who will ring the bell each year.

Botanical Garden

Residents of San Francisco can enjoy the Botanical Gardens for free throughout the day on December 31st. Docent-led tours start at 1:30 p.m. daily and are an educational way of enjoying the more than three-mile walk around the gardens. Or, spend the day walking on your own and enjoying the winter beauty of the trees and indoor gardens.

Rock Climbing

Set your goals high for New Year's and take on the free rock climbing at Mickey's Beach. This short, yet steep, climb is an excellent way to prove to yourself you plan to accomplish the New Year's resolutions on your list. Mickey's Beach is only for the experienced climber, and you will also need to bring your own climbing gear. Spend the day climbing and then set up a picnic at the top of the cliff to enjoy the sunset as you welcome in the new year.
