Shaky Marriage
Those who are involved in a marriage that is fraught with problems and is the source of hostility and fights are more likely to take their problems out on their children in the form of abuse or neglect than those who are in good marriages. These people know that their children are not the source of the poor state of the marriage or their other problems, and they know that abusing or neglecting children is wrong, yet they take out their problems on their children. According to an Oregon State University study, children get punched, hit with electrical cords and pushed down stairs by abusive parents who are frustrated by their own problems and take it out on their children.
Suffered Child Abuse Themselves
Those who abuse and neglect children tend to have faced these problems themselves when they were young. Adults who faced the horrors of abuse should be the last ones who would ever consider abusing children themselves. However, many parents who abuse children suffered the same fate themselves, and they are caught in a vicious circle that they don't know how to escape from.
Financial Problems
Those who are in the midst of significant financial difficulties feel overwhelmed by feelings of guilt, shame and inadequacy. When they aren't loathing themselves for their financial failings, they take it out on those around them, including children. As financial pressures mount and the problems worsen, individuals start to come up with reasons for their problems. They may blame their children's existence for draining their finances and take out their anger on their children. This is not rational thought, but these kinds of pressures lead to individuals making horrible decisions that they regret later on.
