Spagyric medicine is the method of preparing herbal medicines using alchemical procedures such as fermentation, distillation and extraction of minerals or other compounds. This method uses a variety of plants and herbs to create herbal compounds for healing. The particular plant's properties can determine whether the spagyric is made into a tincture, essence, extract or other herbal combination. It is a system that encompasses herbal medicine, homeopathy, aromatherapy and mineral therapy. Talk with you doctor before taking any herbal medicines or supplements.

Common Juniper

Common juniper, also called juniperus communis, is a medicinal plant used in spagyric herbal medicine. It is used for its antiseptic properties, prostate troubles, regulation of the menstrual cycle, as an insect repellent, as a preventative against the flu, and for aches and pains, according to PHYLAK-Spagyric Medicine.

Common juniper is widely used as an herbal medicine worldwide. It called the "boughs of the supernatural," or laxsa laxnokin, by the Gitksan Indians of the Pacific Northwest, who use juniper in herbal medicine. Extract of juniper has been found to have antibacterial properties, according to Leslie Main Johnson in an article published in the June 2006 issue of the "Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine." Other chemicals found in the common juniper exhibit antiseptic, fungicidal, antiviral, analgesic, sedative, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties.

Wild Yam

Wild yam, also called Dioscorea villosa, is used in a variety of creams, tinctures and essences. It is a source of diosgenin, a plant steroid that is synthesized into the hormone progesterone. DHEA can also be synthesized using wild yam, according to MayoClinic.com. DHEA can help depression and obesity, and may improve well-being and quality of life, adds the Clinic.

The roots of the wild yam are used to make spagyric products for menopause, hot flashes, menstrual cycles, prostate problems, vertigo, dizziness, as an antioxidant and for stomach pains.

Dandelion

Dandelion, also known as Taraxacum officinale, is considered a weed in many places. It is used in spagyrics as a digestive aid and for intestinal problems. It is also a tonic for the liver and bowel. The roots and leaves are used to create a tincture and tonic by boiling down the herb in water.

Dandelion is a diuretic, which increases urine production. Besides digestive uses, it is used to treat high blood pressure and liver disorders, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
