When our arteries become clogged with calcium, this creates a medical condition called atherosclerosis. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports the effects of calcium in the arteries can be life-threatening and can lead to strokes and heart attacks. Some herbs can help to dissolve this calcium, which may help to improve our health, but you should always consult your physician before using these remedies.

Garlic

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports garlic is an herbal remedy that can help to destroy plaque in your arteries caused by calcium buildup. According the University of Chicago Medical Center, garlic treats the condition of atherosclerosis and reduces high cholesterol and triglycerides, which leads to calcium buildup. Oregon State University reports women who use garlic may have more benefit in reducing calcium buildup than men who use the herb. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking 900 mg of this supplement per day. However, to be sure of the full effects of garlic for reducing calcium buildup in the arteries, more research is needed.

Hawthorn

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, hawthorn is an herbal treatment that can help to lower high cholesterol and prevent the formation of calcium in the arteries. This herb also has antioxidant benefits and can help to remove the plaque buildup that may already be in your arteries. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking about 160 to 1,800 mg per day of this herbal remedy in two to three different doses.

Guggul

The University of Michigan Health System reports that guggul offers oxidation benefits, which can help to protect against the buildup of calcium in the arteries. In addition, guggul helps to reduce the effects of cholesterol that can also cause a buildup of plaque and calcium in the arteries. In fact, guggul even has similar effects to the drug clofibrate with lowering your cholesterol levels. The University of Michigan Health System recommends taking 25 mg of guggul three times per day for 12 to 24 weeks.
