The term "negative calorie food" is used to describe foods that use up more energy in the form of calories to digest it than the food contains. Foods that actually have no calories do not exist, but eating foods that fall within the negative calorie description may help you shed some unwanted pounds.

Theory

The theory behind a negative calorie food eating plan is that by consistently eating foods that burn more calories to digest than are in the food, you will create a calorie deficit. If you have a caloric deficit, your body will have to rely on energy stores within your body, or fat, for fuel. Whether or not this approach to eating can create sustainable weight loss has not been scientifically proven.

Foods to Eat

All of the foods on the list of foods to eat as part of a negative calorie diet are some form of produce. They include cabbage, carrots, broccoli, beets, asparagus, cauliflower, celery, chili peppers, garlic, lettuce, onions, cucumbers, spinach, apples, grapefruit, lemons, mango, strawberries, oranges, pineapple and cranberries.

Benefits

Most of the benefits of the negative calorie way of eating are based around the fact that all of the foods are fresh produce. This means you will be eating much more fiber, vitamins and minerals than normal. The calorie content of fruit and vegetables is also a lot lower than other foods. Foods high in fiber will also make you feel full longer.

Foods to Exclude

Because you will be looking to consume foods that take some time and energy to digest, it is wise to stay away from foods that do neither. These would include foods high in refined sugar and flour, such as cookies, cakes, white bread and sugary cereals. Soda would also be something you want to avoid. Foods that are higher in protein use energy to process, but most have caloric contents that would disqualify them from being considered a negative calorie food.

Considerations

It is important to consume foods that will supply your body with nutrients other than those found only in negative calorie foods. Following only the negative calorie food list may not give you enough protein, calcium or vitamin B12. Consider supplementing or expanding your diet to include healthy foods that meet all your nutritional requirements.
