The blood typing diet is a diet and lifestyle plan based upon the research of Dr. Peter D'Adamo. He has written two books on his research: "Eat Right for Your Type" and "Live Right for Your Type." His theory is that people have different sets of characteristics as well as dietary and lifestyle needs based on their blood type. According to Dr. D'Adamo's theory, if your blood is A positive, you will have different needs than someone who is B negative. Although Dr. D'Adamo's research is popular, there is no other scientific evidence to support his claims.
History
D'Adamo's diet is based on genetic adaptations that can be observed through ancestry. According to D'Adamo, type A blood emerged as humans developed from a hunter-gather lifestyle to cultivating grains and livestock. He explains that type A developed as a way to fully utilize carbohydrate food sources. He suggests that people with type A blood have lower levels of hydrochloric acid in their stomachs and higher levels of digestive enzymes that help to digest carbohydrates. People with type A are also reported to have lower levels of alkaline phosphate in the intestines, which can make digestion of animal protein and fat more difficult.
Lifestyle
The development of individuals with type A blood is attributed to the shift from hunting and gathering to a phase of building and growing. Therefore, D'Adamo suggests that these individuals are more likely to favor routine, structure and harmony in life. Type As are also believed to have a strong connection between mind and body as well as a propensity to internalize stress. D'Adamo recommends proactive lifestyle strategies, such as relaxation techniques, to help type As find balance.
Diet
The blood typing diet plans presented by D'Adamo are not intended as weight loss strategies. Rather, they are intended to help individuals follow a plan as to how to eat and live to their fullest. Weight loss as a side effect could come from this plan. D'Adamo recommends a vegetarian diet for blood type A. This includes soy proteins, grains, vegetables and fruits eaten as close to their natural state as possible.
Personality
D'Adamo considers your blood type to be a marker of your individuality and personality. According to his research, people with type A blood are said to be good listeners, sensitive to others, detailed, analytical, imaginative and creative. They are also challenged to handle everyday life stress. He suggests that stress can disrupt sleep, create mental fogginess and induce weight gain if it is not properly managed.
Considerations
It is possible that D'Adamo's blood typing research will prove beneficial to you. However, it is important to take into consideration the many other factors that contribute to your personal health, lifestyle, diet, weight and personality. Before changing your diet or lifestyle, speak to your physician to make sure that D'Adamo's blood typing plan is right for you.
