Approximately 27 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis -- a condition that causes degeneration of the cartilage between the bones. Those who have been injured, are aging or perform repetitive movements that can affect joints have greater risks of developing the condition. Natural supplements are among the many approaches to joint health, though those considering them should consult a doctor for advice.
Glucosamine
Glucosamine, a cartilage-building compound, occurs naturally in the body. Aging, injury and certain types of arthritis can cause cartilage to break down, which can cause pain and limited mobility in the affected joints. Glucosamine supplements are used to promote healthy joints. The University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, reports that though the effects tend to be mild and may take several months, several reports indicate that the supplements relieve pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis, particularly when combined with lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise
Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin sulfate, a natural substance that is manufactured from sources such as shark and beef cartilage or by synthetic means, can be found alone or in combination formulas with glucosamine. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, or AAOS, chondroitin sulfate prevents other body enzymes from corrupting the building blocks of joint cartilage. Like glucosamine, the UMMC notes that chondroitin sulfate reduces pain and stiffness that occurs with osteoarthritis, though insufficient evidence exists to prove whether either supplement -- alone or in a combination formula -- is able to reverse the degenerative process of the disease.
Fish Oil
Fish oil supplements, which contain omega-3 essential fatty acids, are touted for their wide range of benefits to the body -- both internally and externally. Because the body is not able to produce the fatty acids, they must be consumed through dietary sources such as fish, nut oils and certain plants. Arthritis sufferers often use fish oil supplements as a complementary therapy for joint health. The UMMC reports that fish oil supplements are proven to reduce joint pain and stiffness. In addition, those who do not have arthritis may reduce their risks of developing the condition.
