Fish oil contains long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, the essentials fats that aren't naturally produced by the body. In scientific studies, fish oil supplementation has been shown to prevent and treat conditions such as heart disease, mood disorders and rheumatoid arthritis. Although, there aren't many studies available assessing the effects of fish oil supplementation on hair quality, the first places a deficiency in essential fatty acids may appear is in the skin and hair. Fish oil supplementation may contribute to healthier hair. However, due the contamination of some fish with environmental pollutants, such as mercury, obtaining purified fish oil from a reputable source is paramount. The National Institutes of Health recommends not exceeding a daily dose of 3 g.
Scalp Health
Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are anti-inflammatory and may improve blood circulation to the scalp. Omega-3 fatty acids may benefit inflammatory conditions affecting scalp health including psoriasis, eczema and seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff. Fish oil may also reduce the production of androgens within the hair follicle. Androgens are hormones which are attributed with increasing sebum production resulting in oilier hair and other skin problems, such as acne.
Stronger Hair
Dry hair tends to split at the ends and break easily. The essential fatty acids in fish oil supplements may reduce hair breakage by increasing the moisture and pliability of the hair. As a result, the hair may have increased durability and resistance to styling aids such as heat. Fish oil may reduce the amount of hair shedding contributing to the faster development of hair strands.
Luster and Shine
The sebaceous glands on the scalp secrete sebum, an oily substance responsible for lubricating the skin and coating the hair. Once ingested, the essential fatty acids in fish oil are incorporated within the sebum providing nourishment to the hair follicles and scalp. As a result, the regular intake of fish oil may add luster and shine to the hair.
