Whether due to your busy schedule, lack of interest in cooking or desire to lose weight, diet plans with packaged meals offer you a convenient method of weight loss. Two diet plans with packaged meals are Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem. Knowing how each works can help you determine the best method to help you achieve weight loss.

Significance

The Jenny Craig diet was pioneered as a means to teach followers about portion control and healthy eating, according to Diets in Review. In more than 640 diet centers across the country, Jenny Craig counselors work with dieters to achieve weight-loss success. Jenny Craig sells packaged meals as a means to encourage portion control. Nutrisystem also sells packaged meals, but does not operate out of physical centers, according to Diets in Review. Instead, Nutrisystem sells products online and over the phone. Nutritional counselors are available for phone and online consultation.

Types

Jenny Craig counselors create a "YourStyle" profile based on counseling sessions over the phone or in person, according to Jenny Craig. Using factors of eating style, activity level and weight-loss goals in order to determine the recommended meal plan of choice. Nutrisystem offers different meal plans: four for men and four for women, according to Health News. Vegetarian, diabetic and "Silver" plans for senior citizens are available.

Counseling

The Jenny Craig plan differs from Nutrisystem because the Jenny Craig plan focuses on nutritional counseling that teaches you how to eat independently of the packaged meals, according to Diets in Review. While Nutrisystem also allows you to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables that you purchase, it does not emphasize a transition from the packaged meals to eating on your own.

Choices

Jenny Craig offers a variety of food choices in order to make the diet more customizable. These include 17 breakfast, 21 lunch, 28 dinner and 25 dessert and snack choices, according to Health News. Nutrisystem offers 170 food items, nearly twice as many as Jenny Craig. These food choices are a blend of breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snack choices, according to Health News.

Sample Meal Plan

The Jenny Craig daily meal plan may include banana nut cereal for breakfast, turkey burger for lunch and chicken fettucine with chocolate cake for dessert, according to Diets in Review. You can eat limitless amounts of low-glycemic vegetables and also can supplement your diet with fruits, dairy and whole-grain foods. A typical Nutrisystem day may consist of a double chocolate muffin for breakfast, chicken and pasta in cacciatore sauce for lunch, macaroni and cheese for dinner, a double chocolate almond cookie for dessert and light yogurt with fresh blueberries for a snack, according to the Nutrisystem website.
