The U.S. Department of Agriculture has created MyPyramid.gov to help you create well balanced, healthy meals using daily requirements that are established based on gender, age and activity level. The suggested daily requirements vary for children, adults, men and women but the basis is the same. A well balanced diet means creating meals that include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and lean proteins.

White Chili

White chili is a fun twist on the traditional stand-by. Chicken broth, northern beans, whole kernel corn, butter beans and chopped skinless chicken breast simmer together with lime juice and cumin to create a delicious, warm soup. Serve with fresh cut tomatoes or avocado sprinkled on top. Add fresh cut fruit dipped in vanilla yogurt for dessert.

Homemade Goulosh

Whole grain elbow noodles mixed with tomato soup, ground lean turkey, whole kernel corn, stewed, diced tomatoes mixed with family favorite spices makes a quick and healthy dinner on the run. Serve with a side salad and sliced fruit for a well balanced meal.

Pizza

Homemade pizza is as fun to eat as it is to make. Have the kids help roll out the dough, place toppings and serve. Kids Health website encourages parents to have kids help in preparing dinner, suggesting age appropriate tasks to help kids feel included and a part of the process. Using whole grain pizza dough and skim milk mozzarella cheese with toppings like green peppers, red peppers, zucchini and mushrooms kids will love it. Serve with their favorite fruit atop a low-fat yogurt ice cream for dessert.
