Raleigh has a wide range of affordable attractions for groups, whether you are taking a field trip as a class, club, business, church group, organization or social group. This Southern city is large enough to offer you variety, combined with field trip attractions that have free or affordable admission.
Museums
Taking a field trip to a museum is a way for you to cultivate a better understanding of a specific topic. There are several museums in Raleigh, where you will discover that admissions and tours are free. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences has free admission, with tours, exhibits and hands-on activities that help you cultivate an appreciation for the outdoors. Another museum with free admission is the North Carolina Museum of Art, where themed tours may be available upon request. Outside of some museums are picnic tables, such as the art museum that welcomes your group to dine in Museum Park if you bring along a picnic-style lunch.
Cultural Landmarks
Field trips that include cultural landmarks, allow you to learn how the city of Raleigh and state of North Carolina has evolved. One of Raleigh's cultural landmarks is the State Capitol, where you and your group can learn about the legislative process and history of North Carolina. The tour lets you see the Rotunda on the first floor, legislative chambers on the second floor, following with the Cabinet of Minerals Room and State Library on the third floor. Outside of the Capitol building, you will see monuments and statues.
Sports Stadium Tours
Touring a sports stadium is a field trip activity, where you can see a behind-the-scenes look of a professional or collegiate sports team facility. While you may have visited a stadium for a sporting event, taking a stadium tour allows you to see the locker rooms, dressing rooms, backstage areas, luxury suites and how events are filmed. If your field trip has 10 or more people, tours are available of the RBC Center on nongame days in Raleigh. The RBC Center is home to the Carolina Hurricanes NHL hockey team, North Carolina State University Men's Basketball team and also hosts concerts.
Evening Entertainment
Following a day of field trip activities, Raleigh has a variety of evening entertainment options for groups to choose from that include shows, activities and themed restaurants. For your evening meal there are kid-friendly destinations like Bullwinkle's Family Food 'n' Fun, where you will find a 17-foot tall rock climbing wall, arcade games and an indoor playground with three slides. Another option is Adventure Landing, where you can choose from three 18-hole miniature golf courses, an arcade, go-carts, batting cages and laser tag.
Considerations
When planning a field trip to Raleigh, make reservations six to eight weeks in advance to ensure availability to tours and attractions. If you are going to visit attractions that charge admission fees, check on group rates to make your trip more affordable. Packing a picnic-style lunch is another way to save money on your field trip, while allowing you to include nutritious food and snacks.
