If you suffer from toenail fungus, you probably already know how hard it is to rid yourself of the unsightly condition. Fungus is difficult to treat once it makes a home under your toenails. Your nail provides a protective barrier, allowing the fungus to thrive underneath it. Because toenail fungus is notoriously hard to treat, many turn to home remedies for their condition. White vinegar is one of the most popular home remedies for fungal problems. Always consult your physician before attempting home treatment of a fungal condition.

History

Vinegar has a long history of medicinal uses. Hippocrates recommended the slightly acidic solution as a general health tonic. Vinegar was in use during the American Civil War to treat scurvy and during World War I to treat wounds. Current day military personnel use vinegar to treat and prevent athlete's foot. Cosmetology schools teach students to use vinegar to prep nails before polishing to prevent nail fungal infections.

Evidence

There is a lack of scientific evidence to support the claim that vinegar can cure nail fungus. However, there is some anecdotal evidence to its effectiveness. Many accounts exist of nail fungus sufferers reporting success with vinegar treatments. Proponents of the treatment believe vinegar prevents the fungus from spreading to new nail growth, eventually allowing the nail to grow out to a healthy condition.

Treatment Protocol

According to MayoClinic.com, the recommended vinegar treatment involves soaking feet in a solution of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Do this daily, for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse well and dry feet thoroughly after soaking. If irritation occurs, cut down on the frequency of vinegar soaks or the concentration of the solution. Some people have success applying straight vinegar directly to infected toenails. However, this concentrated method may increase the chance of irritation.

Time Frame

Expect to wait several months to a year or longer before seeing results from vinegar treatments. Most nail fungus remedies require similarly long treatment periods. If vinegar soaks prove effective, new nail growth will appear smooth and healthy looking. Continue vinegar treatments until all traces of fungal infection disappear.

Considerations

Nail infections are sometimes a sign of a more serious health condition. It is not always possible, without a microscopic examination, to tell what type of infection you are suffering from. Bacterial and other infections can also cause nail discoloration. It is important to get a proper diagnosis before using home remedies to treat your nail condition.
