Zocor is the brand name of simvastatin, which is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. A common name for this class of medications is "statins." The medication is indicated for individuals over the age of 10; females may use the medication one year after their first period. Zocor is used to lower cholesterol levels. It is available in tablet form with doses ranging from 5 mg to 80 mg. Any concerns should be discussed with a health care professional.
Behavior Modification
Patients who have high cholesterol levels should follow a restricted diet, decreasing the intake of fat, saturated fat and cholesterol. "Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach" explains that an excessive intake of cholesterol and saturated fat decreases the amount of LDL cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol, released from the body. The patient must also increase physical activity to lose weight. This may lead to a decrease in LDL cholesterol and increase in HDL cholesterol, which is the "good" cholesterol.
Use
The patient is placed on drug therapy when behavior modification is ineffective. Zocor is a medication of choice in treating elevated cholesterol levels. It is used along with dietary restrictions to reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which is the fat in the body. It is also used to prevent cardiovascular events in patients with high cholesterol levels and coronary artery disease. According to the "Drug Information Handbook," the use of this drug may reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Action in the Body
Zocor works by blocking the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase, which is involved in the formation of cholesterol. This prevents the production of cholesterol in the liver and reduces "bad" cholesterol, explains RxList.com.
Side Effects
Zocor may produce stomach pain or indigestion. About one percent of individuals may experience this side effect, reports The Merck Manuals Online Medical Library. Statins are also associated with vomiting, abnormal taste in the mouth and lack of appetite.
Weight Loss
The patient may notice weight loss if he or she is following an adequate diet and taking the medication correctly. Due to the potential side effects that may occur with the use of Zocor, the patient may see unintentional weight loss; lack of appetite may lead to the patient eating less or skipping meals. If the patient notices a worsening of side effects, call a physician right away. The physician may decide to change the dose or switch to another medication that does not have these side effects.
