Detox foot pads are advertised to extract toxins from your body while you sleep. The detoxification pads are typically placed on the sole of one of your feet before going to bed for 30 consecutive nights. Once thorough internal cleansing has occurred you can use the foot pads every few weeks to keep toxins from rebuilding in your body. However, no credible evidence exists to support the purported cleansing power of detox foot pads, according to MayoClinic.com.

Considerations

The various herbs and other natural ingredients contained in foot pads supposedly produce an infrared response in your body that improves cell function, stimulates blood flow and moves poisons and other waste fluids out of the body. The darkened, soiled, appearance of the foot pad when it's removed each morning is supposedly proof that toxins are being excreted from your body. Foot pad users are typically instructed to use a fresh pad nightly until the pad gradually becomes lighter and lighter. Lighter-colored pads purportedly indicate a notable reduction of toxins in your body.

Purported to Extract Heavy Metals

Detox foot pads pull accumulated heavy metals from the body, according to detoxfootpads.com. Manufacturers claim that certain heavy metals such as lead can find their way into the body through food, water and exposure to contaminated air. Lead can be found in paint, plumbing pipes, leaded gasoline and various other products. Waste and toxic materials are supposedly pulled from the body dissolved in sweat.

Additional Touted Benefits

Some detox foot pads promise to boost the immune system, enhance circulation, improve sleep and treat skin rashes. The touted benefits of detox foot pads also include lifting depression and helping reduce stress. Various detox products claim to diminish headache and arthritis pain, lower blood pressure and improve energy levels, according to MayoClinic.com.

Warnings

All foot pad detox products should be regarded as fakes, warns the website devicewatch.com. Skeptics charge that it's the moisture in your feet rather than toxins that darken the foot pad. The Federal Trade Commission has charged some detox foot pad distributors with deceptive advertising, reports MayoClinic.com. So it's advisable to save your time and money until scientific evidence surfaces to support the effectiveness and safety of detox foot pads.
