Dry hair is a common beauty complaint of both men and women. Dry hair is caused by several factors and results in brittle, inflexible hair that appears dull and lifeless. Adding natural oils such as almond oil to dry hair may help to restore moisture and shine and nourish your hair back to life.

Causes of Dry Hair

Dry hair tends to be brittle, more susceptible to damage and breakage and has little elasticity. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, dry hair can occur for many different reasons, including external and internal factors. Genetics, illness, nutritional deficiencies, environmental factors, shampooing too frequently and over-processing with chemical treatments such as perms and dyes can all cause dry, lifeless hair.

Treatments

Treatments for dry hair are varied and usually include the addition of moisture through nourishing shampoos, conditioners, hot oils and deep conditioners such as hair masks and mud packs. The most commonly used ingredients for adding moisture to dry hair are oils, such as almond, olive and coconut oils, according to author Stephanie Henderson in her book, "Basic Hairdressing." These oils are found in commercially-prepared hair care products and can also be used as single-ingredient treatments. Home remedies may also be effective for treating dry hair and include avoiding frequent use of shampoo, limiting usage of heated styling appliances and avoiding harsh styling products, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

About Almond Oil

Almond oil is extracted through pressing the dried nuts of the almond tree. There are two basic types of almond oil -- sweet and bitter. According to Allergy Net, sweet almonds are preferred for producing oil. Sweet almond oil is favored due to its emollient properties. Bitter almond oil is not used for cosmetic purposes.

Benefits of Almond Oil

Almond oil is a natural oil that is frequently used in homemade hair treatments, aromatherapy hair care recipes and commercially-prepared hair care products. Almond oil can be used as a carrier oil for hair treatments with essential oils, such as by adding lavender oil for use in scalp massage to alleviate dry scalp and improve the moisture content and texture of hair, according to author Francesca Gould in her book, "Indian Scalp Massage." Almond oil can also be used as a nourishing hot oil treatment for use on dry hair prior to shampooing, according to author Henderson. Heat almond oil on the stovetop until warm and rub the oil into your hair. Cover your hair with plastic wrap and leave it on for 15 minutes before washing it out.

Warning

Most people do not experience allergic reactions to almond oil. It is generally considered to be a safe oil for topical application. However, according to Allergy Net, some people who have an allergy to nuts may experience an allergic reaction to nut oils such as almond oil. Avoid using almond oil if you have a nut allergy.
