Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate gland, the male gland that is responsible for making the seminal fluid that carries sperm. Normally, the genetic changes in prostate cells contribute to the development of prostate cancer. These changes allow the prostate cells to grow out of control until they form tumors. Prostate cancer can be benign and malignant. Malignant prostate cancer cells can invade nearby tissues or spread throughout the body. The use of Ayurvedic herbs by prostate cancer patients is now a routine procedure because some herbs appear to slow down the growth of prostate cancer cells. As with any herb or herbal supplement, consult with your health care provider before use.
Green Tea
Green tea is extremely rich in catechins, which show high antioxidant activity, according to Oregon State University. Antioxidants can suppress free radicals, or highly reactive molecular fragments, in the body that are suspected to play a role in cancer. Stanford University notes that catechins are responsible for the protective effect of green tea against prostate cancer.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle, whose scientific name is Silybum marianum, is an annual or biannual plant of the Asteraceae family. In vitro and animal studies suggest that milk thistle has anti-cancer activity against prostate cancer cells, according to the University of North Carolina. The key component of milk thistle, silybin may induce cell cycle arrest in prostate cancer cell lines, according to the Herbal Safety website. However, there are not enough clinical trials in humans to confirm this effect of milk thistle.
Garlic
Garlic is a plant species of the onion family. The medicinal uses of garlic have a long history. Recently, garlic and its preparations have been advocated for the prevention and treatment of various forms of cancer. Garlic organosulfur compounds, mainly allicin and diallyl disulfide, have been widely recognized as agents that can delay the onset and progression of prostate cancer, according to the University of Colorado.
