How to Stop Snoring With Mouth Guards

Snoring can be bothersome for both you and your partner. Some simple tactics, such as sleeping on your side or using nose strips may not cure your snoring. One option that is available to stop snoring is the use of a mouth guard. A mouth guard can be effective for snorers that suffer from mild to moderate forms of obstructive sleep apnea. They stop snoring by preventing tissue in the throat from blocking the airways.

Step 1

Make an appointment with a dentist that specializes in producing mouth guards that can be used to stop snoring.

Step 2

Allow the dentist to make a mold of your mouth. They will use a special type of clay to take a mold of your mouth. This mold is used to customize your mouth guard to fit properly.

Step 3

Fit the mouth guard to your mouth. While the guard is in place, your dentist will examine your mouth to ensure a good fit.

Step 4

Place the mouth guard into your mouth prior to sleep. Wear it throughout the night to prevent snoring. It will clamp to your teeth in order to stop you from snoring. You may notice some discomfort the first few nights as you get used to the device.

Step 5

Report any problems to your dentist. If you are still snoring or you still have discomfort after a few nights, notify your dentist. He may need to adjust the mouth guard.

Tips and Warnings

  • Keep in mind that using a special mouth guard can be expensive, especially if your insurance coverage will not pay for the device. Call your insurance company before visiting your dentist to determine your benefits.
