Gout is a type of arthritis that is characterized by swelling and inflammation of the joints. According to NHS Choices, the website of the U.K. National Health Service, gout usually affects the big toe joint, but it can affect other joints, too. Gout occurs when uric acid builds up and forms crystals in the joints. It is these crystals that cause the pain and inflammation associated with gout. The NHS choices website says that gout treatment aims to relieve pain and prevent future attacks. If you have gout, your doctor may prescribe medicine and ask you to cut back on alcohol and some foods. Herbs may also relieve gout symptoms, although there is no conclusive evidence to show they work.
NSAIDs
If you have gout, your doctor may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Examples include diclofenac and naproxen. NSAIDs relieve pain and reduce inflammation and are usually recommended as a first-line gout treatment. The NHS Choices website says that NSAIDs are not suitable for everyone. You should not take NSAIDs if you have reduced kidney function or are prone to stomach ulcers or bleeding.
Colchicine
Colchicine is an effective gout treatment, although the University of Maryland Medical Center says that it is not the first drug of choice for gout because it can cause serious side effects. Colchicine affects uric acid crystals and reduces inflammation and is usually prescribed if NSAIDs are ineffective. The NHS Choices website warns that you should only take the recommended dosage because high doses can be very toxic.
Cat's Claw
The herb known as cat's claw may reduce inflammation and boost immunity, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Cat's claw is a woody vine native to Central and South America. The inner bark of the plant is used to make herbal preparations such as tinctures and teas. Although cat's claw has been used as a medicine for centuries, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that are there no clinical studies to show that it is effective. Do not use cat's claw if you are pregnant. It may have abortive properties.
Turmeric
Turmeric is an herb that grows in Asia and parts of Africa and is often used to flavor foods. Turmeric contains a chemical known as curcumin, which may have anti-inflammatory properties. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that turmeric is generally safe for most people, although long-term use may cause gastrointestinal problems. Do not use turmeric if you have gallbladder disease. It may make the condition worse.
