Ion cleansing is a way to remove toxic buildup from the body through the feet, according to the Ventura Center for Healing. Environmental pollutants, toxic metals, waste material and chemicals such as pesticides and preservatives in your food are just a few of the impurities that can build up in your body and throw off your pH balance. Ionic cleansing involves soaking your feet in a saltwater foot bath that sends a charged current through the water to eliminate toxins through the bottom of your feet. Having an ion cleansing foot bath will remove impurities and give the body a more balanced pH, according to the International Institute of Holistic Healing.

Step 1

Clean your feet with antibacterial soap. Scrub with an exfoliation glove or loofah sponge to remove dead skin cells that might decrease the effectiveness of the food bath. Rinse thoroughly and pat feet dry.

Step 2

Fill your ionic foot bath with water and plug it into the wall. Add cleansing salt to the water; this is usually included in your kit. Turn on your foot bath according to instructions from the manufacturer. Different foot baths work differently.

Step 3

Soak your feet for 30 minutes. Relax and read a book while you detox. Wait for the water to begin to change color, which in an indication that toxins are being removed from your body.

Step 4

Watch the water to see the color. Compare the color of the water to the manufacturer's assessment chart to see which parts of the body were cleansed. Unplug the foot bath after you are finished.
