Whether you decide to go back to school to get your degree or to learn more for your own benefit, home study courses can be a flexible option for a busy schedule. Nutrition is often available as a home study course because you can learn about the concepts of food and digestion through reading books and self-study modules. You can find home study courses for nutrition as part of online programs.

Nutrition

Nutrition is the study of food and how it affects people throughout their life cycles. Your diet is more than just the food you eat; it affects your overall health and metabolism. Nutrition examines the process of eating and digesting foods, and the different compounds found in food that protect your health. Nutrition is also the study of food preparation and management.

Degree Program

Some courses are offered as part of a degree program in which you study the concepts of nutrition through a series of home-based classes. For example, Kaplan University has a home study program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in nutrition. The curriculum focuses on the science of nutrition, the components of food and the process of digestion and absorption. It also teaches professional skills for use in a clinical setting.

Holistic Health

Some nutrition programs focus more on the study of nutrition as a source of natural health and healing. These programs are often shorter than degree programs and may lead to a certificate to practice. The American College of Healthcare Sciences offers an online program that leads to a certificate in holistic nutrition consulting. The courses focus on good nutrition as part of a balanced lifestyle, wellness therapy and lifestyle changes as part of a holistic approach.

Considerations

To decide what type of home study nutrition program you would like to pursue, think about your ultimate goals. If you want to study to learn more about nutrition and what kinds of lifestyle changes you can personally make, consider taking an individual course. If your goal is to obtain a job in the field of nutrition, consider a program that leads to a degree after completion. There are many career opportunities for those with a background in nutrition, according to Northern Virgina Community College, including becoming a registered dietitian, nutritionist, dietetic technician or nutritional consultant.

Benefits

Some people are unable to attend a campus class because of work or other scheduling conflicts. Online courses offer you the flexibility to work from home on your schedule. A home-based nutrition class allows you to learn nutrition science at your own pace, but you still may need an instructor's approval to maintain a set schedule to finish the course.
