How to Strengthen a Toddler's Immune System Naturally

A toddler's immune system is bombarded throughout the year by germs picked up in a variety of locations. It might be difficult to escape a runny nose, especially during the fall and winter, but strengthening a toddler's immune system will help boost his natural defenses to fight off offending germs and bacteria. Consult a naturopath or pediatrician who has a strong knowledge of herbs and alternative remedies for exact dosages and recommendations for usage.

Step 1

Give your toddler a vitamin supplement daily. The vitamin should contain 250 mg of vitamin C and 10 to 20 mg of zinc. These ingredients are especially beneficial for strengthening the immune system.

Step 2

Give your toddler 250 mg of echinacea once a day. Dr. Sears notes that echinacea has been proven effective in strengthening the immune system and shortening the lifespan of illnesses such as colds and ear infections. Echinacea should be given for up to two weeks once your child is exposed to illness. Echinacea is not meant to replace conventional medical treatment. Consult with a qualified medical professional prior to using echinacea.

Step 3

Give 1 tbsp. of elderberry twice per day for up to three days when an illness begins. RxList explains that elderberry increases immune function. Elderberry can be taken concurrently with echinacea and is sometimes packaged together. Consult with a medical professional prior to adding elderberry to your child's supplement regimen or if you have any questions.

Step 4

Add probiotics to your child's diet daily by offering a supplement, or offering yogurt with live cultures. Dr. Sears explains that healthy bacteria that inhabit the intestines help boost the immune system. If purchasing a probiotic supplement, look for lactobacillus or bifidobacteria on the label. Supplements are available in liquid and powder form and can be purchased in health food stores and some grocery stores. Give the supplement to your child as directed on the product's label. Consult your child's pediatrician for advice and recommendations when using probiotics.
