How to Heal Bone Spurs Naturally With Vitamins

Bone spurs, also known as osteophytes, are growths or projections off the normal bone. Despite the name, according to the Mayo Clinic, the growths are not sharp, but they can irritate the nerves and muscles surrounding the bone. Bone spurs are a common occurrence with osteoarthritis as, per the Mayo Clinic, the body makes more bone to compensate for cartilage loss. The only way to remove bone spurs is by surgery, but vitamins and other nutritional remedies can help strengthen cartilage, encourage cartilage production and prevent future bone spurs.

Step 1

Take vitamin C supplements or eat vitamin C rich foods. Per Zoltan Rona, author of the "Osteoarthritis Natural Health Guide," vitamin C is an important element in collagen formation, and collagen is a major component of cartilage. Vitamin C is found in most fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits. The Office of Dietary Supplements recommends taking up to 75 mg for adult women and 90 mg for adult men.

Step 2

Consult your physician about niacinamide. Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide is available by prescription. According to Rona, niacinamide may improve the metabolism of joint cartilage. Those with liver disease should not take niacinamide.

Step 3

Increase your vitamin E intake. Peter Bales, author of "Osteoarthritis: Preventing and Healing Without Drugs," recommends vitamin E for the joint pain associated with osteoarthritis and because it stimulates cartilage-building proteins in the body. The maximum dosing for adults is 15mg per day.

Step 4

Take vitamin B12. This vitamin stimulates the stem cells in bone marrow to produce red blood cells and contributes to bone health. According to Bales, B12 may also improve joint strength in those with osteoarthritis. The recommended adult B12 dosage is 2.4 mcg per day.
