Prevention Magazine's Diabetes DTOUR Diet, sometimes incorrectly called the Detour Diet, offers diabetics an eating and lifestyle program to lose weight and better manage their symptoms. The Diabetes DTOUR Diet book includes a meal plans, recipes and tips for people with diabetes and prediabetes. The medical advisor for the book is Dr. Francine R. Kaufman, the head of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Children's Hospital in LA.

The DTOUR Diet Book

The Diabetes DTOUR Diet book presents a plan for diabetics to lose weight, increase their energy, lower their blood sugar and reduce stress. The DTOUR diet starts with a two week fast-start program.
The Diabetes DTOUR Diet book also includes recipes and shopping tips for quick and more elaborate dishes.

The Prevention website and magazine also have several DTOUR recipes. Dieters can also buy the Diabetes DTOUR Diet Cookbook for additional recipes and meal ideas.

Calories and Meal Timing

The Diabetes DTOUR Diet meal plans have two options: 1,400 calories or 1,600 calories a day. DTOUR diets have smaller and more filling meals at the right times of day, about every three to four hours a day. The diet calls for three meals and two snacks a day. This strategic eating pattern is designed to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Important Nutrients

All DTOUR Diet meals have four fat-fighting super nutrients: calcium, Vitamin D, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients are important for overall health and fat burning.

Eating fiber-rich and complex carbohydrates can help diabetics regulate insulin. Since these complex carbs are digested more slowly, the pancreas releases insulin at a steadier pace. DTOUR dieters will eat 26 to 29 g of fiber a day.

DTOUR Breakfast

Breakfast is the first meal and a requirement for this diet. Ideas for breakfast include: ½ a whole wheat bagel with light cream cheese and jam; vegetable scrambled eggs with a whole-grain English muffin; oatmeal with nuts, cinnamon and a cup of fat- free milk.

DTOUR Lunch

Many people eat lunch at work, so menu items like salads and sandwiches are popular and portable. A light tuna melt with cheese, chicken salad with mixed greens and dressing, a roast beef sandwich or a quick pesto pizza are all made with whole grains.

DTOUR Dinner

Dinner dishes include items such as: oven-fried chicken, lemon pepper halibut with butternut squash, pan grilled salmon or parmesan chicken strips with sautéed escarole. Whole wheat pasta dishes are also allowed, such as vegetable pasta primavera or pasta with meatballs.

DTOUR Snacks

Many DTOUR snacks include fruit and protein. Some combinations are: melon and fat free yogurt; dried apricots and walnuts; or an apple with peanut butter. Savory snacks like wasabi salmon bites are also an option. Sweet "dessert" snacks on the DTOUR diet include: light ice cream, peanut butter chocolate chip bars or brownies.
