Selenium is a naturally-occurring mineral that is commonly found in salt water, soil and especially in fish, according to the website Health Supplements Nutrition Guide. Taken in the diet by eating foods naturally high in selenium or as a supplemental solution, the mineral can act as an antioxidant and even reduce the risks of contracting some forms of cancer. A deficiency in selenium can manifest itself through a weakened immune system, elevated blood pressure, fatigue and even weight gain. Be sure that you check in with your doctor before starting a selenium supplement regimen to determine whether this treatment is right for you.

Antioxidant

Selenium, when taken as a supplement or as part of a salt water solution, acts as an antioxidant that helps remove free radicals, or molecules in our systems with unpaired electrons. Free radicals can contribute to numerous conditions, including cancer, and even accelerate the signs of aging such as wrinkles.

Cancer Prevention

According to the Susan G. Komen cancer foundation, selenium supplementation has been studied recently as an effective supplement for cancer prevention. The results of the study, known as the "Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial," indicated that patients who supplement their diet with selenium and vitamin E had a reduced incidence of prostate cancer; supplementation might benefit patients suffering from other forms of cancer. The website notes that studies seem to indicate that low selenium levels can increase the chances of contracting cancers of the prostate, digestive and reproductive systems. More studies are needed before the relationship between selenium and cancer is fully understood.

Respiratory Disorders

The Susan G. Komen website reports studies indicate that higher selenium levels in your diet can help improve respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Researchers believe that increasing the selenium intake in your diet via supplemental tablets or a salt water solution containing the mineral can help improve the function of your immune system; it may be effective at treating respiratory disorders associated with a weakened immune system. More information is needed before this can be scientifically proven, however.
