Denton, Texas is on the northern edge of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The U.S. Census Bureau says Denton has a population of over 110,000, with more than 8,800 residents past age 62. These numbers are expected to rise within the next decade as baby boomers reach their late 50s and early 60s. Denton has a wide variety of activities, venues and entertainment to meet their growing population.
Dining
Senior discounts are offered throughout the city. A nationwide chain such as IHOP offers a specialty menu for its patrons 55 and over. Over 20 restaurants within a 15-mile radius of Denton participate in the AARP discount program. Plan ahead if you are on a special diet for diabetes or high blood pressure; many restaurants have menus online so you can consult them.
Activities
Denton has festivals and activities planned all year long. In winter, enjoy the Holiday Lighting Festival at the Denton Historic Courthouse Center. Drink hot cider, take a horse-drawn carriage ride, sing carols and enjoy the Christmas tree lighting. In spring, stroll through vendor stalls while enjoying the Hispanic heritage celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Listen to Mexican music, watch dancers and enjoy the food. During the summer, take your blanket or lawn chairs to Courthouse Center Park and listen to the Twilight Tunes in the evening air. In autumn, go to the annual community tree giveaway and grab one of 1,000 trees Denton gives away to residents.
Community Centers
Denton Parks and Recreations sponsors two senior centers. Denton Senior Center, 509 N. Bell St., offers a variety of activities. Play cards, attend needlework or art appreciation classes, sing in the senior chorus or attend monthly socials. Join the gym and use the treadmills, stationary bikes and weight room, or take part in low-impact aerobics. Lectures, museum visits and shopping trips are offered. The center has a free night at the movies starting at 6 p.m every Wednesday. Play bingo on the first and third Friday each month starting at 12:30 p.m. Dance classes--ballroom or line dancing--are at various times.
The American Legion, 628 Lakey Drive, offers seniors free use of the Internet; you also can shoot a game of pool or play table games, participate in artwork and crafting classes or play bingo or dominoes. There also are exercise classes and health seminars.
Significance
Be active. Participating in fitness and exercise will help you to build strength in your muscles. Aerobics can improve your cardiovascular system, driving more oxygen to your cells and limbs. Exercise helps you maintain strength, flexibility and functionality of joints.
Warning
Before beginning any exercise program, check with your doctor. If you feel stress in your chest or limbs during exercise, stop what you are doing. When participating in an exercise program, wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for your workout, and remember to drink plenty of water.
