Depo-Provera, a hormone shot that works three ways to prevent pregnancy, is a popular method of birth control. The protection lasts 3 months, reducing the hassles of remembering a daily dose, as with the pill. The likelihood of becoming pregnant while using Depo is less than 1 percent, if used properly. However, if pregnancy does occur, the symptoms may be difficult to detect, as common symptoms related to the injection are typical of those with pregnancy.

Morning Sickness

Symptoms of pregnancy can vary from woman to woman. Many become ill in their first trimester because of fluctuating hormones. This undesirable symptom of pregnancy is known as morning sickness. Morning sickness can occur anytime, day or night but may be hard to distinguish among Depo users, as nausea is also a side effect from the injection. Morning sickness may also be accompanied by sensitivity to odors such as perfume, pungent foods and other strong scents.

Heartburn/ Constipation

During the first trimester of pregnancy, heartburn and constipation can occur due to slowed movements from the esophagus into the stomach. In addition, digestion may be sluggish, giving nutrients more time to absorb and ultimately nourish your baby, according to the Mayo Clinic. These symptoms can also cause heartburn and constipation. For Depo users, a change in appetite may be apparent with the injection, resulting in unusual eating patterns that could cause constipation. If your dietary habits have not changed, consider these symptoms as possible side effects of pregnancy.

Breast Tenderness/ Fullness

Breast tenderness is a side effect that can result from both the Depo-Provera injection and pregnancy. Breast tenderness can also occur as a side effect of menstruation in some women. A slight difference in the severity of the symptom occurs with pregnancy, however. Generally, breast tenderness because of pregnancy is also accompanied with heaviness. The breast will feel full and weighty, rather than merely sore.

Frequent Urination

Women who become pregnant may notice an increase in urination. This symptom can be noticed as early as six weeks into pregnancy and is not a side effect of Depo-Provera. This symptom is likely due to the increase of blood and fluids that are present in the body during pregnancy. As pregnancy progresses, pressure is placed on the bladder from your expanding uterus, making trips to the bathroom excessive.
