If you suffer from a chronic illness or experience an overall lack of energy in addition to being overweight, you might want to educate yourself about the UltraMetabolism weight loss program to determine whether it is right for you. The UltraMetabolism Diet claims to help you uncover how your environment reacts with your genetic makeup so you can choose foods that promote weight loss and optimal health, according to the diet's official website.

Identification

Written by Dr. Mark Hyman, a pioneer in the field of functional medicine that incorporates conventional medical treatments with herbal remedies and alternative practices, UltraMetabolism Weight Loss claims to help you lose weight while you naturally revitalize your health, according to the book's official website. Hyman proposes that his diet helps you avoid the foods that lead to obesity and ill health, and helps you combine low-glycemic index meals to accelerate your weight loss attempts.

Theories/Speculation

According to UltraMetabolism.com, Hyman helps you banish common weight loss myths that limit your ability to lose weight and keep it off. These myths include the adage you should exercise more and eat less to lose weight; that you can count calories to lose weight; that eating fat can make you fat; and that skipping some meals will help you lose weight. Hyman claims that the true keys to successful weight loss are alleviating stress, eradicating inflammation, controlling your appetite, properly nourishing your thyroid, detoxifying your liver, turning the calories you eat into energy and preventing oxidative stress in your body that can slow down your metabolism.

Methodology

The UltraMetabolism Diet initially recommends a gluten-free diet, but lets you add gluten-containing foods based on your own individual tolerances, according to Dee Sandquist, a registered dietitian and American Dietetic spokesperson. The diet also advises you to eliminate alcohol, junk food and caffeine, says Dee, and encourages you to eat every three or four hours throughout the day. The UltraMetabolism Diet also recommends that you eliminate high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and refined carbohydrates from your diet and that you eat foods such as lean poultry, grass-fed beef, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and seeds and nuts, adds Andrea N. Giancoli, also a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.

Considerations

UltraMetabolism recommends all the right foods, says Giancoli, but does not stress the concept of portion-control to lose weight. Giancoli also disagrees with Hyman's recommendation of avoiding non-caloric artificial sweeteners, which she feels are safe for human consumption. The American Dietetic Association does not support diets that encourage people to eliminate certain foods, says Sandquist. Sanquist adds that little scientific evidence exists to support detoxification diets, or that a low-glycemic index diet such as UltraMetabolism will help to control your appetite or initiate significant weight loss.

Warning

Speak with your doctor at length about the UltraMetabolism Diet before you attempt it on your own. The diet might not support your individual nutritional needs, or your doctor might recommend a program that does not restrict any foods or food groups from your diet.
