South New Berlin is located in Chenango County in the state of New York. The county has a population of 50,620, according to the 2009 U.S. Census Bureau. Rivers Susquenhanna, Chenango, Unadilla and Otselic cut through the county's mountains offering countless opportunities for outdoor activities. In fact, the name Chenango means "pleasant river flowing through the land of the bull thistle," according the Discover Chenango County website. Other outdoor activities include hunting and golfing.
Canoeing and Trails
The rivers that cut through the hills across Chenango County influence most of the outdoor activities in the areas surrounding the town of South New Berlin. The General Clinton Canoe Regatta Weekend on the Susquehanna River, for example, which takes place every year over the Memorial Weekend, attracts more than 3,000 participants from the United States and Canada. On Memorial Day, participants paddle 70 miles from Cooperstown to Bainbridge. The race has become "the world's longest single-day flat water marathon canoe race," according to the competition's website. Past participants include U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Barton.
Trails and Hiking
Gilbert Lake State Park is host to a lake and three ponds in the wooded terrain. You can explore by walking the park's 12 miles of trails. There are also several other state parks around the town of South New Berlin, and like Gilbert State Park, most of them offer trails that lead to spectacular views. Betty & Wilbur Davis State Park is another one, and features extensive hiking trails and catch-and-release fishing.
Hunting and Fishing
Chenango County also offers some of the best deer hunting in the state of New York, leading to visitors from across the United States to make annual pilgrimages to the area to "claim trophy bucks and venison," according to Chenango County. You can also hunt a wide variety of small game and fowls such as turkey and pheasant in beautiful fall foliage and scenery.
Golfing
If you're a golf enthusiast, there are a number of golf courses near South New Berlin. Some of them are open to the public, while others are part of vacation resorts open to guests only. If you are in Cooperstown, for example, you might want to stay and play golf at the Otesaga Hotel & Leatherstocking golf course, which is open to the public. Sunny Hill is another one in the area. It offers spring and summer getaways for golf enthusiasts. Sunny Hill also offers sports facilities such as two softball fields, a volleyball court and a basketball court.
Accommodations
More than 60 miles of trails in southern Chenango county and about 30 miles in nearby Delaware County are available in winter for snowmobiling. There are several snowmobiling clubs in the area that maintain the trails. One of them is the Delaware-Otsego-Chenagi Snowriders (DOCS), which maintain the trails in the area. If you intend to visit the area frequently, you can join one of these clubs.
