Tea tree oil is derived by steam distillation from the melaleuca alternifolia plant. It is used by people all over the world for a variety of health conditions because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Tea tree oil has not been proven effective in the treatment of ear infections, although some people do receive good results. It is not meant to replace conventional medical treatment. Always consult a physician before using tea tree oil to treat an ear infection for dosage recommendations.
In Water
Step 1
Pour ¼ cup of warm water into a small bowl or jar with a tight fitting lid.
Step 2
Add three drops of tea tree oil to the water and close the container tightly with the lid.
Step 3
Shake the container vigorously for 30 seconds to mix well.
Step 4
Fill a medicine dropper with the tea tree oil and water mixture. Squeeze the mixture into the infected ear with your head tilted to the side. Allow the mixture to sit in the ear for up to a minute.
Step 5
Turn your head to the opposite side and drain the liquid from your ear thoroughly. Repeat three to four times a day until the pain and infection subsides.
In Oil
Step 1
Pour 1 tbsp. of warm olive oil into a small bowl. Add five to 10 drops of tea tree oil and stir to mix well.
Step 2
Drip half a dropper full of the oil mixture into your infected ear.
Step 3
Place a cotton ball into your ear to keep the oil from running out, especially when used at bedtime.
Step 4
Repeat twice daily until the infection resolves.
Tips and Warnings
- Consult a physician if the infection does not improve within two to three days.
