While there's no substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise plan, it doesn't hurt to have some added help in order to shed those unwanted pounds. Most alternative methods of weight loss are not backed by medical research, so there's little proof of whether they work or not. According to an article in "Reader's Digest," the more things you try on a daily basis, the higher your chances of losing weight.

Step 1

Schedule a session with a hypnotherapist. According to the Mayo Clinic, hypnosis might help you shed weight, especially when used alongside other methods. While there are no definitive studies to prove that hypnosis works for weight loss, the Mayo Clinic says it has shown some promise. In fact, participants in different trials have lost an average of six pounds.

Step 2

Try aromatherapy. According to Dr. Alan R. Hirsch in his book, "Scentsational Weight Loss: At Last a New Easy Natural Way To Control Your Appetite," certain smells can reduce your appetite. Some of these smells include peppermint and green apple. To try this, buy essential oils or a candle in the scent of your choice and keep it near you on the kitchen table, the sofa or any areas where you eat.

Step 3

Confuse your brain. According to Faber Birren in his book,"Color Psychology and Color Therapy: A Factual Study of the Influence of Color on Human Life," you can use visual images to trick your brain into feeling fuller. For example, try introducing the color blue into your kitchen and meals. The color blue suppresses appetite, so using blue plates or a blue tablecloth might help. Avoid reds, oranges and yellows, which are supposed to increase appetite. You can also switch to salad plates for your meals instead of using standard dinner plates. Salad plates are smaller, so you'll serve yourself less and end up eating fewer calories.

Step 4

Visit an acupuncturist. According to Dr. Neemez Kassam from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, acupuncture might help stimulate metabolism, control appetite and even help with cravings. A consultation with a certified acupuncturist can help you determine the cause of your weight gain and whether acupuncture can help.
