Pimples are an annoying skin problem that nearly everyone experiences from time to time. While it's usually best to let pimples heal on their own, sometimes you can't avoid popping them. If you haven't yet popped the pimple, dab a bit of toothpaste on and leave it overnight, advises author Diana Irons in her book, "Bargain Beauty Secrets." If you've already popped it, you can try some simple home remedies to help heal the scar and prevent further infection and inflammation.

Step 1

Wash the affected area with an antibacterial cleanser to help remove excess oil and kill any bacteria that remains in the pimple and surrounding areas.

Step 2

Steam your face using a home facial steamer or a pot of boiling water. Boil a pot of water on the stove, remove it from heat, drape a towel over your head and steam your face for 15 minutes. According to cosmetologist and author Parvesh Handa in her book "Speaking Of: Skin Care," steaming your face can help to open your pores and remove any remaining impurities.

Step 3

Dilute 2 tbsp. of lemon juice with 2 tbsp. of water. Lemon juice has naturally astringent properties that can help prevent infection. Apply this mixture to the popped pimple to help kill any germs and prevent further inflammation. According to authors Michael DeJong and Anthony Vavasis in their book, "Clean Cures: The Humble Art of Zen-Curing Yourself," lemon juice may also help to prevent a scar from forming.

Step 4

Apply a mixture of rosewater and cucumber juice to the affected area using a cotton ball. According to author Handa, these ingredients can soothe the affected area, help to combat excess oil production and reduce the appearance of pimples. If applied soon after popping the pimple, the calming properties of cucumber and rosewater can help to decrease redness and inflammation.

Step 5

Dab a small amount of an antibacterial ointment on the pimple. This will help to combat infection, kill remaining bacteria and help the area to heal faster.

Step 6

Consult a dermatologist to discuss procedures that can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, which can be likely after popping a large or cyst-like pimple. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, procedures such as resurfacing, dermabrasion and chemical peels may help to treat acne scars.
