How do I Preserve Fresh Ginger Root?

The medicinal, aromatic and culinary properties of ginger root have been prized for centuries. For short- term storage, ginger root can be placed in a brown paper bag and stored in the refrigerator for several weeks. Although ginger root can be candied, pickled or dried, the best method for preserving ginger root depends on whether it will be used for cooking or medicinal purposes. Fresh ginger suitable for preserving is available in the produce departments of most grocery stores.

Step 1

Select a ginger root that is firm and free from mold.

Step 2

Remove the knobs from the ginger root and peel the skin with the back edge of a spoon or vegetable peeler.

Step 3

Grate the entire root with a microplane or ginger grater, or finely mince the root with a sharp chef's knife.

Step 4

Place the grated ginger in the center of a square of plastic wrap and roll into a cylinder shape. Twist each end of the packet and tie shut with a piece of twine or thread.

Step 5

Store the ginger in the freezer, and break off pieces to use as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • When freezing ginger root slices, freeze the slices separately to prevent sticking together in the container. To grow your own ginger root, soak a piece of ginger root in water for 24 hours, cover with 1 inch of rich potting soil and place in a sunny window.
