Acne is a skin disorder that causes hair follicles under the skin to clog with oil. Acne mostly appears on the face, neck and back. While it is most common in teenagers, anyone can develop acne. While the exact cause of acne is unknown, MedlinePlus reports it is sometimes attributed to consuming greasy foods or chocolate; it is also thought to be caused by hormonal changes. Several medications and skin cleaners help with acne, but a healthy diet is the first step in clearing up acne.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A neutralizes the free radicals caused by acne. Including foods rich in vitamin A may assist in preventing and clearing up acne. The Harvard School of Public Health recommends 900 micrograms of vitamin A each day. Food sources of vitamin A include fortified cereals, eggs and dairy products.
Antioxidants
Berries such as strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries are antioxidant-rich foods that help the blood bring nutrition to the skin. Food rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids also contain antioxidants which help regenerate skin cells and heal unhealthy skin conditions. Sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids include salmon, walnuts and flax seed.
Zinc
Foods that contain zinc may reduce the effects of acne; the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends consuming 30 grams per day. Zinc plays an important role in the immune system and is thought to aid the body in neutralizing the bacteria that can cause acne. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, yogurt and pumpkin seeds.
Water
Drinking water aids the body in flushing out toxins thought to cause acne. According to MayoClinic.com, men should drink three liters, or 13 cups of water, per day; women should consume 2.2 liters, or about nine cups, per day.
