Having fewer than three bowel movements per week is called constipation. Constipation may cause straining, a bloated feeling and discomfort in the abdominal area. It may be caused by factors such as low dietary fiber, medications and dehydration. However, everyone experiences bouts of constipation. Patchouli may relieve the symptoms of constipation and make going to the bathroom easier. Always consult with your physician before you attempt to self treat any condition.

Patchouli

Patchouli is a perennial herb that may grow up to a meter in height. The plant leaves are soft and have an aroma when rubbed. According to Herbs2000.com, the main ingredient in patchouli essential oil is patchoulol, patchoulene and norpatchoulenol. These herbs are harvested up to three times a year depending on the climate. Steam is used to distill or dry the leaves to obtain the oil. Patchouli has many medicinal uses. It may be used as a tonic, astringent, antiseptic or a sedative.

Causes of Constipation

The most common causes of constipation are a lack of fiber in your diet. According to National Institute of Digestive Disorders, the average American only gets up to 14 g of fiber each day. The recommended daily amount of fiber is up to 35 g. Fiber aids in softening stools and making them easier to pass. Additionally, not enough liquid in your diet may cause hard, bulky stools that are difficult to pass. Certain medications may also have an effect on the consistency of your stool.

Symptoms

If you are suffering from constipation you may experience symptoms such as abdominal cramps, feel as if you are bloated and you may find that you have to strain when trying to go to the bathroom. You may also have a sense of rectal blockage.

Treatment With Patchouli

Patchouli may be used in a massage blend to stimulate gastric juices, aid in digestion, relieve constipation and combat flatulence. The oil may be applied to the abdomen area and massaged or used in a warm compress.

Warning

Constipation left untreated may lead to certain complications such as rectal prolapsed, hemorrhoids and fecal impaction. Rectal prolapse may lead to mucus secretions from the anus. Fecal impaction may occur if your stool accumulates and hardens and cannot be passed with a bowel movement. If this happens, your stool may have to be removed manually.
