Many women have experienced low libido at some point in their lives. While this may be a common issue, it does not have to become a long-term problem. There are many herbal supplements available that can be used to increase sex drive.
Instructions
Step 1
Examine the reason for your low drive so you can choose herbs that will work effectively. Three common reasons to consider are vaginal dryness, difficulty feeling stimulated and excess stress. A fourth reason, which is more difficult to pinpoint on your own, is a hormonal imbalance. If you suspect this is the case, request that your doctor test your hormone levels. If you decide that your low sex drive is caused by numerous factors, you may combine more than one of the herbs listed below.
Step 2
Choose one or more of the herbs listed below. Keep in mind that many herbs can take 4 to 6 weeks to begin working.
Muira Pauma: This herb from the South American rain forest is the best choice if vaginal dryness an issue. It is most commonly sold in tincture form. According to Phyllis Balch, in her book, "Prescription for Herbal Healing," studies have shown that using this herb alone to increase sex drive was effective in 51 to 62 percent of cases.
Damiana: Damiana is a great choice if your low sex drive is caused by difficulty feeling stimulated. It stimulates the inguinal nerve, bringing blood to the vaginal area. According to Steve Schechter, N.D., damiana is best used short term, taken in four doses throughout the day before having intercourse. Damaina is sold in both tincture and capsule form.
Schizandra- Schizandra is an adaptogen, meaning that it helps the body adapt to stress. Because it is also a mild aphrodisiac, it is a good choice to increase sex drive if stress is a major factor. Schizandra can be purchased in tincture or capsule form.
Maca: According to Ed Smith in his "Therapeutic Herb Manual," maca can be used as "a restorative tonic in cases of sexual debility and diminished libido." Because of its typical use as a general libido enhancer, maca is an excellent herb to use if you can't pinpoint a reason for your low sex drive or believe it may be caused by numerous factors. It is primarily sold in tincture form.
Step 3
Set up a regimen for taking the herbs you've chosen and stick to it. With the exception of damiana, all of the herbs above need to be taken on a regular basis. Doses are generally listed on the bottle so they have not been listed here.
