Does Pregnancy Cause Breast Tenderness?

Increased Hormone Levels

As soon as a woman becomes pregnant, her hormone levels start increasing. Estrogen and progesterone production increases, as they help your body get ready for pregnancy and help your breasts prepare for their main job---nursing your baby. Increased hormone levels can not only make breasts tender, but sensitive to the slightest touch. Changes in hormone levels can also affect breast tissues, leading to changes that increase tenderness.

Boosted Blood Flow

The volume of blood in your body increases significantly during pregnancy, and a lot of that extra blood goes straight to your breasts. That extra blood flowing in the breasts makes them swollen, sensitive and tender. You may even see veins in your breasts become more visible as more blood is circulating.

Soothing Sore Breasts

You can take steps to alleviate the soreness. Invest in a bra with plenty of support---look for ones without underwire to prevent it from digging into your skin. You may also need to tell your partner it's "hands off" your breasts until they start feeling better. And, you should stick to soft, silky materials that won't irritate your sensitive breasts.
