Fitness centers across the country employ personal trainers to work with their members. The American Council on Exercise estimates that in 2010, there were more than 50,000 trainers working in nearly 30,000 clubs nationally. Becoming a personal fitness trainer does not require a college degree or formal post-high school education, but attaining certification can set you apart from others in the job market.

Education

Fitness trainers are not required to hold college degrees, according to the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Some employers will require a high school diploma and may give preferential treatment to those who hold an associate's degree. Military experience may actually pay off for those seeking certification. The International Sports Sciences Association reports that the Army Vocational/Technical Pilot Program and the G.I. Bill will cover certification costs and training.

Bally's Total Fitness, the world's largest fitness club chain, requires its applicants to have a high school diploma or equivalent -- applicants with certifications or college degrees are preferred.

24 Hour Fitness, another national chain, has the same schooling requirements, but requires certification for its trainers.

Training

Trainers often act as first responders in the case of injury or health issue on the gym floor. To complete its personal trainer certification, candidates must have first aid and automated external defibrillator, or AED, training. Most clubs, including Bally's and 24 Hour Fitness also require CPR certification.

Experience

Personal training certification programs do not require experience to graduate. While experience is preferred, clubs will often hire newly certified trainers and educate them on the job. 24 Hour Fitness does not require experience, but gives preferential treatment to applicants with a professional background in the field. As part of the interview process, applicants may be required to design a personal training program to prove their knowledge of the field.
