Acid reflux occurs when undigested food and stomach acids back up through the lower esophageal sphincter into the esophagus. Also called heartburn or acid indigestion, the symptoms can range from burning pain in the chest and throat to coughing, belching, burping, bloating and other unpleasant digestive symptoms. Certain natural remedies and supplements may help reduce symptoms. Consult your health practitioner before using supplements with which you are unfamiliar.

Pineapple and Bromelain

The digestive enzyme bromelain comes from pineapples and may help reduce symptoms and prevent bouts of acid reflux, according to the Acid Reflux Cure website. Eat fresh pineapple or drink freshly made pineapple juice at the end of a meal to obtain its benefits. Some people may find pineapple juice too acidic; and in those instances, may have better luck using bromelain supplements, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. When using bromelain for acid reflux, you should take the supplements before or during the meal. Bromelain is available at health food stores. Follow label directions or consult your health practitioner for directions and dosing. If you choose to use pineapple to relieve your reflux, use only the fresh fruit and juice. Canned and bottled products are heated, which destroys the nutrients and enzymes, making them ineffective. Bromelain can thin the blood, so if you take blood-thinning medicines, consult your health practitioner before using bromelain.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Although scientific research is lacking, anecdotal evidence indicates that apple cider vinegar may be very helpful for preventing and reducing the symptoms of acid reflux, according to "The pH Miracle." Vinegar neutralizes stomach acids by aiding the pancreas in releasing bicarbonate into the digestive tract. Although this process happens naturally, adding vinegar to your daily routine helps keep your system alkaline, preventing excess acid buildup. Apple cider vinegar is the mildest of the vinegars and the most effective in accomplishing this state, according to Dr. Theodore Baroody in "Alkalize or Die."

Mix 1 to 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar with 8 oz. water and drink at least one glass daily to create an alkaline-forming state in your system. If you are having an acid reflux attack, you can mix a glass as directed above and drink it at the time to relieve painful burning. Start with the lower amount of vinegar and build up to the full quantity to acclimate your body slowly.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is highly alkaline and instantly neutralizes stomach acids, creating an alkaline state throughout the system, according to Drugs.com. If you need something to relieve your acid reflux immediately and you are unable to use apple cider vinegar, drink an 8 oz. glass of water mixed with 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Baking soda can raise the blood pressure. If you are taking medicines for high blood pressure, consult your health practitioner before using baking soda.
