What To Look For

Look for a sleekly designed Global Positioning System (GPS). The unit can be positioned anywhere in your vehicle, but generally on the dash board above the stereo is the ideal location, as it has the best access to the sky and the satellite navigation information. The best units will have the ability to fit securely to your dash. You can also purchase a portable friction mount to secure your device. Look for models with advanced technology that improves satellite reception, such as the Belkin GPS receiver. Also ensure that your device has a large memory card for carrying maps.

Common Pitfalls

Ensure your device has maps of the United States, Canada and Mexico. Some devices are limited in their scope. Also, note the battery life of the device before purchasing. Many receivers require you to charge the battery too often. The TeleType and the DeLorme have exceptional battery life. Watch out for devices with small screens. You don't want to be squinting at your GPS unit as you are driving.

Where To Buy

Amazon.com has the widest selection and best prices for Bluetooth GPS navigation systems. You could also visit Best Buy or Future Shop for a selection of the more popular devices. These stores generally mark their prices up by around 100 percent over Amazon, and the selection isn't as wide. The advantage to purchasing these units at a store, however, is you get to handle your device and ask questions before making your purchase.

Cost

The Garmin nuvi is a smart purchase, since it functions with 260 watts and has a 4.3-inch widescreen. In 2010, this product sold for about $100 on Amazon.com. The Magallan RoadMate system has a slightly larger monitor than most, at 4.7 inches, but it comes with a larger price tag too. The unit sold for around $130. For an even larger monitor and some of the best satellite reception, buy the TomTom XXL system, which comes with a 5-inch screen. This device has an added feature where you can mark a location that is in the middle of nowhere and name it so you can find that location again.
