Detoxification is a normal body process that eliminates or neutralizes toxins via the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph and skin, according to Linda Page in her book "Healthy Healing Detoxifications." Although the body naturally detoxifies the body, certain fruits may help to facilitate the process, Page says. A fruit-based detox program may encourage cleansing to prevent diseases and immune-compromised episodes, Page reports. Nonetheless, you should always contact a physician before engaging in any detox regimen.
Lemon, Lime and Pineapple
Lemon, lime and pineapple act as natural solvents, which help to cleanse the liver and gallbladder, according to Doreen Virtue and Jenny Ross in the book "The Art of Raw Living Food." Pineapples in particular, Virtue and Ross say, because they contain the enzyme bromelain, facilitate healing and the digestion of proteins. Brenda Watson and Leonard Smith suggest adding lemon and/or lime to water to help alkalinize the body, as lemon naturally stimulates bile production and helps to cleanse the kidneys.
Cranberry
According to Virtue and Ross, cranberry is a natural diuretic that cleanses the kidneys and detoxifies the urinary tract. It also helps draw out chemical and toxins that accumulate in these regions, Virtue and Ross say. Watson and Smith recommend drinking raw cranberry juice to prevent bacteria from sticking to urinary tract cells and the bladder. It may also help to reduce constipation and urinary incontinence.
Watermelon
Similarly to cranberry, watermelon is also a natural diuretic that has a high water content helpful in flushing out of the body any water-based toxins and in eliminating fluid retention from a high-sodium diet, according to Virtue and Ross. Watermelon is also an excellent source of C, which is a powerful antioxidant that safeguards the body against free radical damage. Linda Page recommends a watermelon-based detox program in which you eat the fruit throughout the day to alkalinize the body and flush out accumulated toxins.
