Not long ago, detoxification diets were praised for their rejuvenating effects. Now, many people who begin a detox diet do so for weight loss. If you use a detox diet incorrectly, it can cause serious health issues, even death in some cases. Some detox programs may be effective when followed as directed. Be sure to speak with your doctor before starting a detox diet so that you are aware of any potential complications and what to do if they occur.
Raw Food Diet
The raw food diet is a detoxification diet that may revitalize your body and help you lose weight. The raw food diet is designed to clean toxins from your body, leading to increased immunity, a clearer mind, more energy and improved health. This diet consists almost solely on vegetables and fruits that are fresh and organic. While on the diet, you start your day with a melon, such as watermelon, cantaloupe or honeydew. Later in the day, you may consume plums, oranges, pineapples and grapefruit as long as you do not mix the fruits together. By the end of the day, many people feel sluggish and tired. This is when you should consume leafy greens and fresh vegetables, such as bell peppers, cucumbers and watercress. By following the raw food diet, you may feel more energetic, slimmer and cleaner internally.
The Lemon Juice Diet
The lemon juice diet, better known to some as the Master Cleanse, is a very strict diet in which you consume nothing but lemon juice mixed with fresh water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for a period of at least 10 days. According to the Master Cleanse website, Stanley Borroughs first introduced the diet in the 1940s. The diet has become popular, even among some celebrities such as Beyonce Knowles. Although the Master Cleanse garners a lot of media attention about its effectiveness, no medical testing has examined the long-term safety of this detox diet. Many nutritionists share the belief that staying on the lemon juice diet for a long time may actually become counterproductive to your metabolism.
The Inside-Out Diet
The Inside-Out Diet is a detoxification diet created by Dr. Cathy Wong. According to Dr. Wong, this diet helps you lose weight by getting your liver healthy and removing toxins from your body. During the first week, you should eliminate any foods that contain dairy, wheat or gluten products from your diet. In place of these foods, you may eat gluten-free grain products, egg whites, vegetables, fruits and organic poultry. After the first week, you may gradually reintroduce previously eliminated foods into your diet. If you begin to gain weight or feel bloated after eating a certain food, however, you should permanently strike that food from your diet.
