Restless legs syndrome, or RLS, can cause you to have uncomfortable feelings in the legs while in a lying or sitting position. It causes you to want to move your legs, which increases the discomfort. This condition can occur at any age, but does worsen as a person becomes older. RLS also causes difficulties in sleep patterns as it keeps the person awake. Many natural supplements are purported to help ease the symptoms of RLS, although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not provide supporting evidence for such. Consult a physician prior to taking any supplement.
Vitamin B
Vitamin B may help your body's nervous system function normally. Restless legs have been attributed to uncontrolled and low levels of nutrients in the brain, which in turn create an uncomfortable feeling in the legs, the RLS Foundation reports. By having the sufficient amounts of this nutrient in your body, restless leg syndrome symptoms may somewhat be controlled.
Folic Acid
Low folic acid levels also may be connected to the uncomfortable restless leg syndrome. By taking a supplement of folic acid, you may supply the needed nutrient to prevent the symptoms of restless leg, the RLS Foundation reports. You should consult your physician about the potential benefits and side effects of folic acid and any other supplement you intend to take.
Iron
Like many other minerals, you need sufficient levels of iron in your body to help prevent the symptoms of restless legs, MayoClinic.com reports. Supplements of iron come in pill form. You should ask your doctor about taking an iron supplement because too much of it in your system can cause iron toxicity. The doctor may wish to monitor iron levels in the blood.
Magnesium
Magnesium occurs naturally in your body, but various illness and medications can deplete its levels. Taking magnesium gluconate as a supplement can help replenish the nutrient level, which in turn helps the functioning of nerve impulse conduction and muscle responses. Lower levels of magnesium can interfere with nerve impulses from your brain, which may cause restless leg syndrome symptoms to occur. RLS is a neurological condition that requires normal levels of magnesium in the body to prevent further symptoms, RLS Foundation reports.
