Depending on what a baseball bat is made of, cool weather can significantly affect its performance. Composite baseball bats can break quite easily if they're used in temperatures below 70 degrees, according to the website Baseball Corner. Enter the baseball bat warmer. Most commercial bat warmers fasten at the base of the head of the bat, where it starts to get thinner going into the handle. Bat warmers can be quite expensive, however. If you want to save a few dollars, you can make your own warmer with a few simple materials.

Step 1

Measure the length and circumference of the bat. Most commercial bat warmers cover only the top of the bat, not including the handle. So measure from the top of the bat to the bottom of the barrel, or where the bat starts to get thinner.

Step 2

Buy a large piece of fabric. For best results, use fleece or a wool-lined material. You can even get creative and buy fabric featuring your favorite team's logo. These types of material are available at several online retailers.

Step 3

Based on the measurements of your bat, mark the fabric with fabric chalk, and then cut the fabric. Leave about an inch of extra material widthwise for your drawstring hole, and about 3 inches lengthwise for your inseam.

Step 4

Sew a small pouch for a drawstring by folding the extra material at the bottom of the fabric up. Sew the pouch on what will be the inside of the bat warmer.

Step 5

Sew the piece of fabric vertically on what will be the inside of the bat warmer and then turn it inside out.

Step 6

Feed your drawstring through the pouch you sewed at the bottom of the bat warmer. Tie a knot at the end of your drawstring so it doesn't fray, or add a pull tightener.

  • Large piece of fabric, preferably fleece or a wool-lined
