DHEA is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The body converts DHEA to sex hormones that play a role in good health. DHEA levels peak when adults are in their 20s and then decline with increasing age. A deficiency in DHEA may lead to inflammation problems, immune function problems and may also contribute to increased risk of some cancers. Studies have shown that DHEA can have many benefits on the body.

Anti-inflammatory Benefits

Inflammatory diseases include serious conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and Crohn's disease. DHEA may be helpful in reducing the inflammation associated with these conditions. This is possible since DHEA inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines in the body, which play a role in bone loss and joint damage. DHEA may also help improve mental function and increase bone density, two effects common to those with inflammatory problems.

Adrenal Benefits

According to the Mayo Clinic, studies have shown that DHEA is helpful in treating adrenal insufficiency. Adrenal insufficiency has been associated with fatigue and a reduced quality of living. DHEA may help improve the effects of this condition by improving hormone levels, increasing sex drive and increasing the capacity to exercise. Furthermore, DHEA may help treat depression and obesity, two conditions that may be associated with poor adrenal function.

Body Fat Reduction

DHEA may play a helpful role in reducing body fat and increasing lean body mass. DHEA can increase testosterone levels, a hormone important in muscle-tissue development. According to NutraSanus.com, DHEA has been shown to reduce overall body fat content. It may do this by blocking enzymes that contribute to fat production in the tissues.
