Making the decision to have a baby can be stymied by fertility problems. You may find that you have issues with sperm count or sperm motility that may be treated medically with medications or hormone therapy. If you're interested in trying to improve your fertility naturally, there are a variety of herbs that can improve the health of your sperm and improve hormonal balances that can effect fertility.

Your fertility can improve by including ginseng in your daily diet. Ginseng, one of the most popular herbs in the United States, may improve male fertility by increasing the number and movement of your sperm, according to MayoClinic.com. In addition, the University of Maryland Medical Center cites research published in the October 2008 issue of the "British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology" that indicates Asian ginseng helps improve erectile dysfunction and increases sex drive in men. You can take 200 mg one to three times daily of standardized ginseng extract; 1 to 2 g of fresh ginseng root daily for up to three months; 1/2 to 2 g of dried root chewed daily or 1/4 to 1/2 of ginseng fluid extract one to three times daily. Do not take ginseng if you have high blood pressure or low blood pressure.

Flaxseed Oil

Consider incorporating flaxseed oil herbal supplements into your diet to improve your fertility. Health Communities indicates that taking 1 tbsp. daily of flaxseed oil can help you increase your sperm count or improve the motility of your sperm. This herb serves as a rich source of essential fatty acids, which can keep your sperm healthy and improve blood flow to your penis. Taking this herbal supplement can also help you keep your prostate healthy as you age. MayoClinic.com indicates that you should take 10 to 250 g of flaxseed oil daily but warns large dosages can result in intestinal blockages. Do not take flaxseed oil if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. No scientific research exists to prove flaxseed oil's effectiveness in treating male infertility.

Saw Palmetto

Incorporating saw palmetto, an herb common in the southern United States, into your diet can help boost your sex drive and may maintain the male reproductive system. Crazy For Tea notes that you can drink an herbal tea made from saw palmetto to increase your fertility by mixing one to two tsp. of dried saw palmetto fruit in five ounces of boiling water and letting it steep for ten minutes. There is no evidence to suggest saw palmetto has an effect on male fertility, but some scientific research indicates that it can help reduce symptoms from prostate problems, according to Medline Plus. You should take 160 mg twice daily or 320 mg once daily for this purpose.
